Fennesz Sakamoto is a collaborative project between renowned artists Ryuichi Sakamoto and Christian Fennesz. The collaboration began in Rome when they performed a laptop duet at the Auditorium Della Parco Musica for the Romaeuropa Festival on November 28, 2004. This 19-minute overture was recorded and released as the Sala Santa Cecilia EP by Touch in 2005. From 2004 to 2006, Sakamoto and Fennesz worked on their debut album, with Sakamoto based in New York and Fennesz in Vienna. They exchanged guitar, piano, and electronic pieces, shared notes and ideas, and developed themes together, periodically meeting for live performances. Ultimately, they finalized the mix in New York. For their second album, Flumina, Sakamoto composed 24 tracks while touring Japan, playing a piano piece in a different key at the beginning of each show. Fennesz processed and modified these recordings using synthesizers, guitar, and electronics, and they met again in New York to finalize the double album.
