Ferro Gaita is a Cape Verdean band founded on July 22, 1996, known for playing funaná music. The band consists of members Adão Brito (bass), Carlos Lopes (idiophones, vocals), Emanuel Tavares (percussion, congas, vocals), Estevão Moreno Tavares (accordion, vocals), Frutuoso de Pina (cowbell, vocals), and Jorge Martins (drums, vocals). The name "Ferro Gaita" is derived from the "Ferro" (or "Ferrinho"), an iron bar scraped with a knife, and a "Gaita," a small accordion, both of which are commonly used in funaná music. Funaná originated in the early 20th century on Santiago island and is distinct from other Cape Verdean musical styles like coladeira and morna, as it is more upbeat and danceable, featuring raw lyrics. In the 1990s, Ferro Gaita revitalized the traditional funaná style by returning to the use of traditional instruments, which had been largely replaced by electronic ones in previous decades. The band gained recognition after performing at the Festival of Gamboa in May 1997, shortly after recording their first album, "Fundu Baxu," in Rotterdam, which became the best-selling album in Cape Verde that year.
