Figures On A Beach was formed in 1981 in Detroit, originally consisting of Anthony Kaczynski (vocals, keyboards, occasional bass), John Richard Rolski (guitar, keyboards), and Michael Smith (drums). Their early releases included the Swimming EP on Metro-America and the single "Breathless" in 1984. In 1985, the band relocated to Boston as a quintet, adding Perry Tell on bass, guitar, and keyboards. They signed with a label and collaborated with a producer who guided them towards an upbeat synth-pop sound. Notable releases from this period include the anthem "No Stars" from the album Standing On Ceremony in 1987 and the single "Accidentally 4th Street (Gloria)" from their self-titled 1989 album. Figures On A Beach disbanded in 1993. Kaczynski and Smith later became founding members of Fireking, while Ewen eventually joined them. Kaczynski and Ewen now tour extensively with The Magnetic Fields.
