Fishmans is an eclectic Japanese band with stylistic roots in psychedelia and reggae, formed in Minato, Tokyo in 1987 by Shinji Sato, Kin-ichi Motegi, and Kensuke Ojima. The band went on hiatus in 1998, but after the untimely death of their lead singer Sato in March 1999, they regrouped as a live band. Fishmans incorporated a variety of genres and styles into their music over the years, including funk rock, dream pop, ambient pop, trip hop, and post-rock, and continue to experiment with new sounds to this day. A tribute ensemble was founded in 2011, led by Motegi. The band's members include Shinji Sato (lead vocals, cornet, guitar, bass) from the start until 1999, Kin-ichi Motegi (drums, vocals) from the start to the present, Kensuke Ojima (guitar) since 1994, Susumu Hisamatsu (bass) from 1987 to 1988, Yuzuru Kashiwabara (bass) from 1988 to 1998 and then from 1999 to the present, and Hakase (keyboards) from 1989 to 1995 and again from 2009 to the present. Support members have included various musicians on guitar and keyboards across different years.
