The Five Satins were formed in 1955 in New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A. The group included members such as Fred Parris, Al Denby, Ed Martin, and Jim Freeman. They are best known for their doo wop classic "In The Still Of The Night," which became a significant hit, making them one of the most famous doo wop outfits, despite not having another hit of the same magnitude. The origins of the Five Satins trace back to the Scarlets, a doo wop group led by Fred Parris, which formed in 1953 while Parris was still in high school. The Scarlets achieved a local hit with "Dear One" in 1954. Later that year, Parris established the Five Satins with vocalists Al Denby, Ed Martin, and Jim Freeman. In 1956, the group recorded "In The Still Of The Night," a song Parris had written in the basement of a local church. The single was released on Standard Records in the spring of 1956 and was later leased to Ember, where it became a major hit, peaking at number three on the R&B charts and number 25 on the pop charts by the end of the year.
