The Fleshtones are often recognized as garage rock revivalists, blending fuzz guitar and Farfisa organ sounds with elements of rockabilly, '50s and '60s R&B, and surf music into a style they refer to as "super rock." Formed in 1976 in Queens, New York, the band consists of vocalist/keyboardist Peter Zaremba, guitarist Keith Streng, bassist Jan Marek Pakulski, and drummer Bill Milhizer. Their mission was to bring back the simplicity and unselfconsciousness of early rock & roll. The group found a place within New York's punk and new wave scene, gaining attention with their early single "American Beat," which led to a contract with independent label Red Star and later I.R.S. The Fleshtones released their debut EP, Up-Front, in 1980, followed by their first full-length album, Roman Gods, and an unreleased studio album, Blast Off!, recorded in 1978. In 1983, they released Hexbreaker, which is considered their finest album. The band continued to produce music through the '80s with albums like Powerstance in 1992 and Beautiful Light in 1994, the latter marking the debut of bassist Ken Fox, who replaced Pakulski and has remained with the group since.
