Foetus is the main solo project and 'one-man band' of Australian composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Jim Thirlwell. He conceived the Foetus concept upon relocating to London in 1978, where he composed and recorded all instruments himself, handling production and artwork. Each album features a new 'band' name incorporating the word 'foetus' in a deliberately provocative manner. The debut single was released in 1981 through Thirlwell's own label, and he later adopted the moniker You've Got Foetus On Your Breath, producing two full-length albums in 1981-82. In 1984, Thirlwell moved to New York City, becoming associated with the avant/industrial underground scene. The next two albums were released under the alias Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel in 1984 and 1985. The concept evolved again as Foetus Interruptus for the fifth album in 1988. A compilation of known Foetus aliases and rare tracks was released in 1989. During the 1980s, Foetus was primarily a solo project, with occasional live support from musicians in industrial and experimental bands. Live performances were often credited simply as 'Foetus' or various side-projects, including Foetus Corruptus. In November 1990, an extended configuration named Foetus In Excelsis Corruptus Deluxe performed at a legendary Manhattan venue, documented on a 2xCD live album released in 1992
