Fontella Bass was an American soul singer and pianist, born on July 3, 1940, in St. Louis, Missouri. She is best known for her 1965 R&B hit "Rescue Me," for which she sought recognition as a co-writer. Fontella was married to a jazz trumpeter and was the daughter and sister of unnamed individuals. She passed away on December 26, 2012, in her hometown of St. Louis, Missouri.
