The Four Mints were a soul group from Columbus, Ohio, active during the 1960s and 1970s. The group consisted of Ben "Pete" Caldwell, James Brown, Donald Russell, and Jimmy Harmon. Their first single, released in 1969, received limited play in minor markets, but Caldwell, the lead singer, wrote both sides of the midtempo ballad, which was later included on compilation albums like "Dynamite Soul Harmony" and "Northern Soul Classics." The group's second release, which is often regarded as their finest moment, came in 1971. Led by Caldwell, it became a #1 record in Columbus and a regional hit along the Eastern Seaboard and throughout the Midwest. "Row My Boat" hit the R&B charts and became their biggest record, earning them ovations during performances. To promote their popular single, Capsoul organized a successful regional promotional tour that included stops in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area, Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana, and Michigan. The group's only album was released in 1973 and performed well, but a third and final release later that same year did not chart. Disenchanted, the group disbanded temporarily not long after. In 1995, Moss reissued the "Gently Down Your Stream" LP on CD as part of the Numero Group Label.
