Franco Luambo, born François Luambo Makiadi Lokanga La Djo Péné on July 6, 1938, in Sona Bata, Belgian Congo, was a prominent figure in 20th-century Congolese popular music. He founded and led his band from 1956 until his death on October 12, 1989, in Namur, Belgium. Renowned as the originator of the modern Congolese sound, Franco revolutionized African music, releasing hundreds of records and training numerous musicians, which earned him super-star status across the continent. A master of Rumba, he was affectionately nicknamed "Le Grand Maître" and the "Sorcerer of the Guitar" for his fluid guitar playing. Franco had a close association with the president and, in 1974, acquired ownership of the nationalized pressing plant.
