Frank Wess was an American jazz saxophonist, flutist, arranger, and composer, born on January 4, 1922, in Kansas City, Missouri. He passed away on October 30, 2013, in Manhattan, New York. Wess was a member of Billy Eckstine's orchestra from 1946 to 1947, followed by Eddie Haywood's orchestra in 1947 and Lucky Millinder's orchestra in 1948. He worked with Count Basie from 1953 to 1964, where he formed a notable pairing with fellow saxophonist, known as "The Two Franks." Additionally, he played in Clark Terry's Big Band from 1967 to 1970. Wess also engaged in extensive session work, contributed to Broadway shows, created jingles, and performed in the bands for TV shows such as Saturday Night Live and The David Frost Show from 1969 to 1972. In recognition of his contributions to jazz, he was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts jazz master title in 2007.
