Frank Zappa was an American composer, lyricist, songwriter, guitarist, vocalist, bandleader, conductor, producer, and filmmaker, born on December 21, 1940, in Baltimore, Maryland. He passed away on December 4, 1993, in Los Angeles, California. Of Italian descent, Zappa's grandfather immigrated to America from Partinico, Sicily. He became one of the most accomplished composers in the rock genre, blending influences from contemporary classical figures with elements of late '50s doo-wop, rock & roll, and guitar-heavy rock, which were prominent in the '70s. Zappa was also known for his sharp satire, employing a wicked sense of humor and absurdity that resonated with his fans, even when his lyrics pushed the limits of taste. A prolific record-maker, he produced a vast amount of music under his own labels and through distribution deals, after navigating difficult relationships with major industry players. In the '80s, he regained the rights to his earlier albums and began reissuing them, while remaining at the forefront of music technology. In 1988, Zappa released his official autobiography and started a world tour, which was cut short in late 1991 due to a cancer diagnosis. Despite his illness, he continued to release albums at a rapid pace.
