Frankie Avalon is an American vocalist of Italian descent, born on September 18, 1940, in Philadelphia, PA. He gained fame in the music, film, and television industries during the 1950s and 1960s. Avalon achieved significant success with two #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959: “Venus” and “Why.” As a young artist, he was one of the first to be labeled as a “Teen Idol,” amassing 31 charted U.S. Billboard singles from 1958 to late 1962, including hits like “Just Ask Your Heart,” “I’ll Wait For You,” “Bobby Sox To Stockings,” and “A Boy Without A Girl.” Many of his songs were written and produced by his collaborators. Avalon starred in several “beach party” comedy films during the mid-1960s and later took on more romantic roles as well as dramatic parts in films such as the historical western “The Alamo” and the 1961 science fiction film “Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.” He frequently appeared as himself in numerous television episodes, including ABC’s “The Bing Crosby Show” and “The Patty Duke Show.” Avalon also became a national television spokesperson for Sonic Drive-In and appeared in the 1965 episode “Brother, Brother” of “Combat!” as a childhood friend of Pfc.
