Frankie Knuckles was an American DJ, record producer, and remixer, born on January 18, 1955, in the South Bronx, New York City. He passed away on March 31, 2014, in Chicago, Illinois, due to complications from diabetes. Knuckles served as the DJ at the Warehouse nightclub in Chicago from 1977 to 1982, where his unique style and musical selections contributed to the emergence of house music, a term that initially described something cool or fresh in Chicago. Known as "The Godfather of House Music," his influence led to the city of Chicago naming a street and a day in his honor in 2004. He received a Grammy Award in 1997 and was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2006, he founded his own label. Following his death, his record collection was preserved and made publicly accessible by the Stony Island Arts Bank in Chicago in 2015. The Frankie Knuckles Foundation, a not-for-profit organization established in his memory, continues to honor his legacy.
