Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor, music teacher, arranger, organist, philanthropist, author, nationalist, and a Franciscan tertiary. He was born on October 22, 1811, in Doborján, Austria-Hungary (present-day Raiding, Austria), and died on July 31, 1886, in Bayreuth, Germany. Renowned for his showmanship and exceptional skill at the piano, Liszt is often regarded as one of the greatest pianists in history. His musical innovation ventured into largely unexplored territories, particularly in harmonic research, especially evident in his late piano works, which anticipated elements of early twentieth-century harmonies. Liszt had a strong preference for program music, as demonstrated by the numerous symphonic poems he composed. He was also the father-in-law to another notable figure.
