Fred McMullen was a country blues singer and guitarist, born around 1905, possibly in Hosford, Liberty County, Florida. He is believed to have died in February 1960 in New York, though this is not definitively documented. Little is known about his life prior to his recording sessions in 1933 with guitarists Weaver and Moss, except that he spent time in a convict camp in DeKalb County, Georgia. McMullen was a regular performer at the 81 Theater in Atlanta, where he met Weaver and Moss. He is noted for introducing Moss to Blind Willie McTell, which led to later collaborations between them. From January 16 to 19, 1933, McMullen participated in recording sessions in New York City alongside Weaver, Moss, and Ruth Willis. After these sessions, he seemingly disappeared from the music scene and never recorded again. The Atlanta city directory listed him once in 1932 as MacMullin. Moss had limited recollection of McMullen but speculated that he might have returned to Macon. While there is no confirmed record of his death, blues historian Bob L. Eagle suggested he could be the same Fred McMullen who passed away in February 1960.
