Fred Wesley, born in 1943, is a notable US trombonist and the son of a high school teacher and big band leader. His passion for jazz began early, but in 1962, he joined the Revue. After a brief period of Army service, he had his first term with an original band from 1968 to 1970. Following a short stint in Los Angeles, he returned for a second period with the Godfather of Soul from 1971 to 1975, which evolved after the original line-up departed in 1971. Wesley is a versatile trombonist who has held featured roles with various groups, serving as both a member and leader. He joined the band in the late 1980s as a replacement for another musician.
