Freddie King was an influential American blues guitarist and singer, born on September 3, 1934, in Gilmer, Texas. He passed away on December 28, 1976, in Dallas, Texas. In 1949, he relocated to Chicago, Illinois, where he began his musical career. In 1956, he recorded his first record as a leader and became known for being one of the first blues musicians to perform with a multi-racial backing band. Freddie King is often recognized as one of “the three kings” of electric blues guitar, alongside Albert King and B.B. King (who are not related). In 1993, Texas Governor Ann Richards proclaimed September 3 as Freddie King Day. He was ranked 15th in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
