Freddie Mitchell was a US tenor saxophonist and composer, born on April 8, 1918, in Orlando, Florida. He grew up in Tampa, Florida, where he began performing as a blues pianist at the age of 13. In 1931, his family moved to New York City, where he learned to play the clarinet and tenor saxophone, ultimately choosing the latter as his main instrument. In 1949, Mitchell formed his own band, which became the house band for a label that same year. He passed away on June 20, 2010, in Mount Vernon, Westchester, New York.
