Freddie Waters Jr. (born December 18, 1942 – died August 23, 2000) was an American singer from Lebanon, Tennessee. He began his musical career in the mid-1960s as the lead singer of a vocal group called the Hytones, discovered by producer and arranger Robert Holmes. The Hytones recorded a couple of obscure 45s on a small Excello subsidiary before Holmes joined Ted Jarrett's Ref-O-Ree label, bringing Freddie and fellow Hytones member Eddie Frierson along with him. Freddie and Eddie recorded several duets in a Sam & Dave style, but Freddie soon emerged as the label's most prominent artist, achieving several regional hits, most notably "Singing A New Song." This track gained traction in major southern markets, catching the attention of Curtis Mayfield, who leased and re-released it on his Curtom label, leading to further success in the South. With the hiring of Ted Jarrett and Robert Holmes as the house production team for Audio Media recording studio in Nashville, Freddie secured a contract with October Records, a new soul label. His first single, "I'm Afraid To Let You Into My Life / I'm Gonna Walk Right Out of Your Life," was included on the album "Just Enough To Get Me Cool," released in the UK in 1987 by Move Records.
