Freddy Martin & His Orchestra was an American jazz and pop orchestra active from 1932 to 1968. The orchestra gained initial success at the Bossert Hotel in Brooklyn, NY, performing on the Marine Roof in 1931. Led by a tenor saxophonist, it was recognized as the first "Tenor Band," featuring an all-tenor sax section, two brass players, a violin trio, and a rhythm section, which influenced other bands to adopt a similar style. Their first recordings were made in 1932, and they switched to a different label in October of the same year, continuing to record numerous titles until December 1937. In April 1933, they recorded four tracks for another label. The orchestra reached its peak popularity from 1938 to 1958 and began releasing albums with a new label in 1958, followed by additional releases between 1960 and 1963. Their final recordings took place with another label from 1966 to 1968. Freddy Martin & His Orchestra was featured on the cover of Billboard's August 2, 1947 issue and appeared in several films between 1942 and 1958, including "Stage Door Canteen" in 1943.
