Freeborne was a psychedelic pop rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1966, originating from the remnants of two local frat rock groups, the Indigos and the Missing Links. The band's name was inspired by the film "Born Free." The lineup consisted of Bob Margolin (lead guitar), Dave Codd (bass guitar, vocals), Nick Carstoiu (lead singer, rhythm guitar, keyboards), Lew Lipson (drums), and Mike Spiros (keyboards, trumpet). Initially, the Indigos and the Missing Links performed covers of Top 40 hits, but key members sought to create original material. In early 1967, Freeborne began playing at music clubs and fraternities, eventually attracting the attention of blues musician Barry Richards, who helped them secure a recording contract with Monitor Records. Their debut album, "Peak Impressions," was recorded in part at ESP studios and CBS studios in New York City. Despite their young age, the band featured three skilled multi-instrumentalists who played various orchestral instruments. Their music combined a highly psychedelic theme with traces of blues, influenced by Margolin's experience watching a Remains concert. Released in mid-1967, "Peak Impressions" achieved moderate success on the East Coast but suffered from its association with the Bosstown Sound, a commercial campaign aimed at competing with the San Francisco Sound. A significant factor in the album's commercial disappointment was the band's limited touring, as three members were still in high school.
