Freur was formed in the early 1980s in Cardiff, Wales, by Karl Hyde, Rick Smith, and Alfie Thomas. Initially, the band had a graphic 'squiggle' as its name, but after recruiting John Warwicker and drummer Bryn Borrows, they signed a recording contract with CBS Records. The label required a pronounceable name, leading to the compromise of calling themselves "Freur." Their first and only hit single, "Doot Doot," reached number 59 on the UK Singles Chart in 1983. The track was recorded and co-produced at The Point studio in London, which was managed by Rupert Merton, who also signed Freur. Following "Doot Doot," the band released five additional tracks between 1983 and 1985, including "Matters of the Heart," "Runaway," "Riders in the Night," "Devil and the Darkness," and "Look in the Back for Answers," but none achieved chart success. Freur released two albums: "Doot Doot" in 1983 and "Get Us Out of Here!" in 1985, the latter of which was only available in Germany and the Netherlands.
