Frijid Pink is a blues rock band from the Detroit area, formed in 1967. They are best known for their 1969 rendition of "House of the Rising Sun," which reached the Top Ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #3 in Canada, selling over one million copies and earning a gold disc. The original lineup included drummer Richard Stevers, guitarist Gary Ray Thompson, bassist Tom Harris, and lead singer Tom Beaudry, who later adopted the stage name Kelly Green. Larry Zelanka later joined as an off-staff keyboardist. The band was formed when members of the Detroit Vibrations, Stevers and Harris, were joined by Thompson, who convinced Vibrations' manager that he was the better guitarist, and Beaudry. Frijid Pink spent their early years touring the Southeast Michigan/Detroit area before signing with Parrot Records. Their first two singles, "Tell Me Why" and "Drivin' Blues," released in 1969, did not gain much attention. However, their cover of "House of the Rising Sun" brought them significant success. In their native Detroit, Frijid Pink was so popular that a young Led Zeppelin opened for them at the Grande Ballroom, and they often shared the stage with notable acts such as the MC5, The Stooges, and The Amboy Dukes.
