Fugazi is a U.S. rock band formed in the fall of 1987 in Washington, D.C. The band consists of guitarists and vocalists Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto, bassist Joe Lally, and drummer Brendan Canty. Known for their alternative, post-hardcore, and experimental sound with punk roots, Fugazi is recognized for their DIY ethic, self-managed business practices, and disdain for the music industry. They played their first show on September 3, 1987, and have been on indefinite hiatus since 2003, with their last live performance occurring on November 4, 2002. From approximately 1998 until their final shows in 2002, a touring musician contributed second drums and percussion to their music. The term "fugazi" is derived from Vietnam War-era U.S. military slang, meaning messed up or ambushed.
