Funkmaster Flex, born Aston Taylor in Brooklyn, is a prominent hip-hop DJ known for his influential role in New York's rap scene since the 1990s. He gained recognition as a top DJ at Hot 97, the leading radio station in America, and became the weekly DJ at the renowned club, the Tunnel. Flex's impact on the industry was solidified with his commercially successful mix albums, starting with the first volume of the 60 Minutes of Funk series in the mid-'90s. His popularity surged further when he landed his own daily show, Direct Effect, on MTV at the end of the decade. The son of a Jamaican DJ, Flex was inspired by early hip-hop DJs like DJ Red Alert and began his radio career at KISS-FM as an assistant to Chuck Chillout. He later followed Chillout to WBLS, where he began spinning at clubs and parties, attracting attention for his skills. In 1995, he released his first major-label mix album, The Mix Tape, Vol. 1: 60 Minutes of Funk, and continued to release several more volumes and other albums throughout the late '90s and beyond. In addition to his work as a radio DJ and album artist, Funkmaster Flex has also been a remixer and hosted the Spike TV series Ride with Funkmaster Flex. His 2005 album, Funkmaster Flex Car Show Tour, featured music from the successful series.
