Furry Lewis was an American country blues singer and guitarist born on March 6, 1893 (or 1899) in Greenwood, Mississippi. He passed away on September 14, 1981, in Memphis, Tennessee. Lewis began his recording career with the Vocalion label in 1927 and became a prominent figure in the Memphis music scene, often performing at venues like the Pee Wee Saloon on Beale Street. Despite losing a leg, he continued to play music and worked as a street-sweeper until his retirement in 1966. In 1972, he participated in the Memphis Blues Caravan alongside other notable artists. He opened for The Rolling Stones twice and gained recognition in Playboy magazine. Lewis died of heart failure at the age of 82, shortly after contracting pneumonia, and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery in South Memphis.
