Gabor Szabo was a Hungarian jazz guitarist born on March 8, 1936, in Budapest, Hungary. He became an influential figure in jazz, known for blending jazz, pop-rock, and his native Hungarian music. Inspired by jazz music from Voice Of America radio broadcasts, Szabo began playing guitar at the age of 14. In 1956, he escaped Hungary and moved to the USA, where he attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston. In 1958, he performed at the Newport Jazz Festival. From 1961 to 1965, he played with a quintet led by a southern California drummer. Starting in 1966, Szabo recorded several well-received albums under his own name. In the late 1960s, he co-founded a short-lived label and later signed with other labels. Gabor Szabo passed away in Budapest on February 26, 1982, at the age of 45, due to liver and kidney disease while visiting his homeland.
