Gábor Szabó was a Hungarian jazz guitarist born on March 8, 1936, in Budapest, Hungary. He became an influential figure in jazz, known for blending jazz, pop-rock, and his native Hungarian music. Inspired by jazz music from Voice Of America radio broadcasts, Szabó began playing guitar at the age of 14. He escaped Hungary in 1956 and moved to the USA, where he attended the Berkeley School of Music in Boston. In 1958, he performed at the Newport Jazz Festival and later played with a quintet led by a southern California drummer from 1961 to 1965. Starting in 1966, he recorded a series of well-received albums under his own name. In the late 1960s, he co-founded a short-lived label and later signed with other labels. Szabó passed away on February 26, 1982, in Budapest, Hungary, at the age of 45 due to liver and kidney disease while visiting his homeland.
