Gang Starr was an influential East Coast hip hop duo formed by the late MC Guru and DJ/producer DJ Premier. Their music uniquely blended elements of New York jazz with hip hop. The group originated in Boston, Massachusetts in 1985, initially consisting of Keith Elam (known as Keithy E. The Guru) and DJ 1,2 B-Down (also called Mike Dee), with contributions from various producers like Donald D, J.V. Johnson, and DJ Mark the 45 King. In 1989, after a brief split, Guru continued under the Gang Starr name and teamed up with DJ Premier, who sent him a beat tape that Guru liked. This collaboration led to the release of their first single "Words I Manifest" and the album No More Mr. Nice Guy in the same year. Throughout their career, Gang Starr played a significant role in shaping the New York hip hop sound. Their catalog, particularly albums like Step in the Arena (1991), Daily Operation (1992), Hard to Earn (1994), and Moment of Truth (1998), is highly regarded by critics. Notably, their track "Jazz Thing" was featured on the soundtrack of Spike Lee's film Mo' Better Blues.
