Garbage is an alternative and modern rock band hailing from Madison, Wisconsin, USA. The band consists of Shirley Manson on vocals, keyboards, and guitar; Duke Erikson on bass, guitar, and keyboards; Steve Marker on guitar, keyboards, and loops; and Butch Vig on drums, loops, noise, and effects. In the early 1980s, producers Vig and Marker established Smart Studios in Madison. Vig and Erikson were part of the group Fire Town, which emerged in the late 1980s as a continuation of their previous band Spooner, with Marker serving as their roadie. The duo began creating electronic and rock mixes for various artists, including Nine Inch Nails and House Of Pain. In 1993, they sought to form a band that would incorporate their remix and genre-bending techniques, leading them to search for a vocalist and fourth member. Guitarist Steve Marker discovered Shirley Manson, the lead singer of the Scottish band Angelfish, through a video on MTV's "120 Minutes." After inviting her to audition in Madison, Manson initially did not succeed but later requested another chance, resulting in early versions of several songs. The band officially formed in 1994 and released their self-titled debut album in 1995. All four members contribute to songwriting and production.
