Garland Green was an American soul artist, pianist, and lyricist, born on June 14, 1942, in Dunleith, Mississippi. He was the tenth of eleven siblings, born to Garland Green, Sr. and Mary Green. In 1967, he gained recognition by winning a local talent show at the Trocadero Theater in Chicago, which led to him opening for singer Lou Rawls at the Sutherland Lounge, a notable venue in Chicago's jazz scene. Green achieved significant success in 1969 with his hit song “Jealous Kind of Fella,” co-written with his former spouse, Armstead. The song became a major national success, peaking at #5 on the Billboard R&B chart and #2 on the Cashbox soul chart. By 1971, it had sold over a million copies, establishing itself as his biggest hit. Garland Green passed away on February 9, 2026.
