Gary Burton (born January 23, 1943, in Anderson, Indiana, USA) is an American jazz vibraphonist and composer. He is known for his innovative four-mallet chording technique on the vibraphone, which he developed as a self-taught musician, setting him apart from the traditional two-mallet approach. Burton is also recognized as one of the few openly gay musicians in jazz history. He came out in his 40s and reported that it had no negative impact on his career, contrary to his initial fears. After facing health issues that affected his perfect pitch and ability to perform at his high standards, Burton retired from performing in 2017 at the age of 74.
