**Bio: Gasper-Lawal** Born on September 23, 1948, in Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria, Gasper-Lawal is a renowned percussionist and band leader. He relocated to the UK in the mid-1960s and quickly established himself in the London session scene, collaborating with a diverse array of artists, including Ginger Baker’s Airforce, Stephen Stills, the Rolling Stones, George Clinton’s Funkadelic, and Barbra Streisand. In 1975, he joined the London-based rock band Clancy, but left in 1977 to return to Nigeria. After moving back to London in 1978, he formed his own group, Afriki Sound, later known as the Drum Oro Band. This group created a unique style that blended traditional West African roots music with elements of experimental rock and jazz. A strong advocate for the evolution of traditional African music, Lawal believed in integrating certain Western influences. He released two albums on his own Cap label: *Ajomase*, which features hit singles “Kita Kita” and “Oromoro,” and *Abiosunni*. Both albums showcased prominent expatriate African musicians in London. In the mid-1980s, he co-founded Britain’s Black Music Association, aiming to improve conditions for black musicians.
