Gayle McCormick (November 26, 1948 – March 1, 2016) was an American singer from St. Louis, Missouri, best known for her work with the rock band Smith. As a teenager, she gained experience performing as a soprano with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the Suburb Choir. She later joined the local group Steve Cummings and the Klassmen before moving to Los Angeles, where she became a member of Smith. The band, discovered by Del Shannon, secured a record contract with Dunhill, leading to their debut album "A Group Called Smith" in 1969. Their cover of "Baby It's You" achieved a Top 5 position on the American Pop Charts and earned gold record status. They also covered The Band's "The Weight" for the "Easy Rider" soundtrack in 1969. Their success included performances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "American Bandstand." After the release of their album "Minus-Plus" in 1970, the band disbanded. McCormick then pursued a solo career, achieving a Top 50 hit with "It's a Crying Shame" in 1971. She retired from the entertainment industry in the mid-1970s and later passed away after a battle with cancer.
