Gene Davis was a prominent guitarist and singer in the Southern California country-rock scene. He began his career in the 1950s, releasing singles and making appearances on local television shows like Cal Worthington's Cal's Corral. Originally from Saint Louis, Missouri, Davis is perhaps best known for his role as the bandleader at the iconic Palomino nightclub in North Hollywood during the early to mid-1960s. The Palomino attracted talented musicians such as James Burton, Jerry Cole, Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Jay Dee Maness, Johnny Meeks, and Red Rhodes, contributing to the vibrant live rock scene in LA. Davis's time at the Palomino predated the club's shift towards a more rock-oriented focus, although there was certainly some crossover during his tenure.
