Eugene Edward McKown, known as Gene McKown, was born on July 16, 1932, in Liberty, MO, and passed away on May 18, 2011, at his home in Osceola, MO. A veteran of the United States Navy, he served aboard the USS Essex in the early 1950s. After his discharge, Gene embarked on a music career that spanned the rest of his life, cutting his first singles for the Aggie label in California in 1958, which he co-founded with the owner of Prior Brass Co. Following 1964, he performed in the Kansas City area for 25 years, primarily at The Starlite Club in Riverside, and later at Howard's Bar in Gladstone until 1988. Gene was a respected songwriter and recording artist, with one of his compositions, “Rockabilly Rhythm,” recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
