Gene Pitney was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and engineer, born on February 17, 1940, in Hartford, Connecticut. He began his musical career by recording under various pseudonyms, including Jamie & Jane in 1958 and Billy Bryan in 1959. Between 1961 and 1964, Pitney recorded seven songs by notable songwriters, achieving two entries in the U.S. Billboard Top Ten in 1962 with "Only Love Can Break a Heart" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." His songwriting peak came with his composition "He's a Rebel," which reached number 1 in the U.S. while his own recording of "Only Love Can Break a Heart" was at number 2. During the mid-1960s, he was frequently paired in the studio with Musicor country artists by his manager Aaron Schroeder. Later in the decade, Pitney found greater success in the U.K. and Europe. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a performer in 2002. Pitney passed away in a hotel after a gig on April 5, 2006, in Cardiff, Wales, UK.
