Genoa Keawe was a renowned musician born on October 31, 1918, who had an extensive repertoire of Hawaiian and hapa-haole music. She performed for nearly 70 years and recorded extensively from the 1940s through the 1990s. Throughout her career, she received numerous accolades, including the Sidney Grayson Award in 1980, which later became the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987, awarded by the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts. In 2000, she was honored with a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Additionally, in 2005, she received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of Hawaii. Genoa achieved fluency in Hawaiian through her mother-in-law, who was raised in a household where Hawaiian was the primary language. She passed away on February 25, 2008.
