Georg Philipp Telemann was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist, born on 14 March 1681 in Magdeburg, Electorate of Brandenburg (now Germany). He passed away on 25 June 1767 in Hamburg, Roman Empire (now Germany). Telemann was one of the most prolific composers in history and was regarded by his contemporaries as a leading German composer of his time. He was favorably compared to his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, who made him the godfather and namesake of his son, as well as to other notable composers he knew personally. His music reflects a blend of national styles, including French, Italian, and Polish influences, and he played a crucial role in bridging the late Baroque and early Classical styles. As a child, Telemann displayed significant musical talent, mastering the violin, flute, zither, and keyboard by the age of ten, and composing an opera titled "Sigismundus," based on a text by Postel. Despite his early promise, his family disapproved of his musical pursuits, leading his mother to insist he study law at the University of Leipzig in 1701. However, within a year, he founded the student Collegium Musicum, which held public concerts, wrote operatic works for the Leipzig Theater, and became the musical director of the Leipzig Opera in 1703.
