Georg Riedel was a renowned Swedish double bass player, arranger, and composer of German Bohemian descent, born on January 8, 1934, in Karlsbad, Czechoslovakia (now Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic). He passed away on February 25, 2024, in Maria Magdalena, Stockholm, Uppland, Sweden. Riedel was a master of the double bass and a significant figure in the Swedish jazz and children's music scenes. He migrated to Sweden at the age of four, where his musical journey began in Stockholm. Initially training as a violinist, he eventually transitioned to the double bass and jazz. Throughout his career, Riedel collaborated with various artists, notably creating "Jazz På Svenska" ("Jazz in Swedish"), which became the best-selling Swedish jazz record. This album fused traditional Swedish folk melodies with jazz rhythms and harmonies. Riedel's work in film adaptations further popularized his music among children and adults alike. His compositions for "Pippi Långstrump" (Pippi Longstocking), "Emil i Lönneberga" (Emil of Lonneberga), and "Karlsson på taket" (Karlsson on the Roof) are particularly cherished, with the song "Idas sommarvisa" (Ida's Summer Song) from the stories of Emil and Ida becoming a staple in Swedish kindergartens and schools.
