George Butler was an American record producer, label executive, and A&R man, born on September 2, 1931, in Charlotte, North Carolina. He passed away on April 9, 2008, in Castro Valley, California. Butler worked for several prominent jazz record labels from the 1960s to the 1990s, including as a producer for a label from 1972 to 1976 and as an A&R executive for another label after 1978. When Columbia became part of a larger organization in the 1980s, he was promoted to senior vice president and executive producer after 1988. Throughout his career, Butler signed and launched the careers of several now-famous artists. His most notable achievement as a record-label executive was encouraging jazz trumpeter to come out of retirement and record again.
