George F. Smallwood was born in Washington D.C. at the end of 1945 and passed away on May 2, 2016, in Hyattsville, Maryland. He grew up in a musical family but initially had little interest in pursuing music as a career. Smallwood worked as a truck driver until 1968, the year he lost his vision. Following his blindness, he dedicated himself to music, teaching himself to sing and play the keyboard. Forming a band posed challenges due to his disability, but he managed to recruit musicians from his immediate surroundings, including family members and his mailman, who turned out to be a talented bass player. Over the course of about a decade, Smallwood and his group, Marshmellow Band, released six singles and an LP.
