George Shearing was an Anglo-American blind jazz pianist and composer, born on August 13, 1919, in Battersea, London, UK. He passed away on February 14, 2011, in New York City, NY. Shearing moved to the United States in 1947 and became one of the first post-war British jazz musicians to establish a successful career there. In 2007, he was appointed OBE and subsequently knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. He was renowned for his distinctive piano technique known as "The Shearing Sound," which involved a type of double melody block chord with an additional fifth part that doubled the melody an octave lower. By playing these five voices on the piano, Shearing would double the top voice with the vibraphone and the bottom voice with the guitar, creating his signature sound. One of his most notable compositions is "Lullaby Of Birdland."
