Gert Thrue was born and raised in the port town of Ebeltoft on Denmark’s rural Djursland peninsula in the mid-1950s. He is a self-taught musician who started playing bass guitar and organ. At the age of fifteen, he befriended a younger teenager named Per Høyer, who played the drums. Together, they practiced in Thrue’s parent's basement, forming various short-lived jam bands. They shared a passion for progressive music, including the works of Jimi Hendrix. In addition to jamming with Høyer, Thrue played bass in Fabel, a Danish language psychedelic rock group from the nearby seaport town of Grenaa. The Serwin brothers, two members of Fabel, introduced him to albums by Hansson & Karlsson, a Swedish instrumental jazz fusion duo known for their collaborations with Jimi Hendrix and their cult following in Europe. This exposure to Bo Hansson's Hammond Organ playing was transformative for Thrue, leading him to purchase a Hammond TTR-100 Portable Organ in 1974.
