Getatchew Mekurya (1935–2016) was a pioneering Ethiopian saxophonist celebrated for his bold, improvisational style and deep influence on Ethio-jazz. Known for adapting the traditional **“Shellela”** war chant into his saxophone performances, Mekurya fused Ethiopian musical traditions with the raw power of free jazz. A longtime member of the **Negarit Band** and later the **Either/Orchestra**, his collaborations brought global recognition to Ethiopia’s rich musical heritage.
