Getatchew Mekurya (1935–2016) was a pioneering Ethiopian saxophonist whose powerful tone and improvisational brilliance helped define the Ethio-jazz genre. Drawing from traditional Ethiopian melodies and the warrior vocal style known as *shellela*, he transformed cultural heritage into a modern, expressive sound. As a longtime member of the Addis Ababa City Band and later a collaborator with international artists like The Ex, Mekurya’s innovative blend of jazz, funk, and Ethiopian modes earned him global recognition and cemented his legacy as one of Africa’s most distinctive musical voices.
