The Gewandhausorchester Leipzig is one of the oldest symphony orchestras in the world, based in Leipzig, Germany, at the Gewandhaus concert hall. Its origins date back to 1743, when a society known as the Grosses Concert began performing in private homes and later in a tavern called "The Three Swans." The orchestra held its first concert in the Gewandhaus in 1781. Throughout its history, the Gewandhausorchester has been led by various music directors (Gewandhauskapellmeister) from 1781 to the present day, with notable tenures spanning from 1781 to 1785, 1785 to 1810, 1810 to 1827, 1827 to 1835, and many others, up to the current director who has been in place since 2018.
