Gilles Peterson is a French broadcaster, DJ, and record label owner, born on September 28, 1964, in Caen, France. He has been based in London from a young age and has been involved in various labels throughout his career. His first label was followed by the creation of a scene he coined during an early DJ event, and he later co-founded a label with others, named after his Brownswood Basement radio show specials, along with a reissue label. Peterson gained significant attention through his numerous radio shows. His show, Worldwide, produced by Somethin' Else for BBC Radio 1, became the biggest broadcasted show from 1998 to the present day before transferring to BBC 6 Music. An internationally syndicated variation of Worldwide has made him one of the most syndicated radio DJs ever. His radio prominence has led to global DJ gigs across Europe, Japan, Australasia, the US, and beyond. One of his early gigs was the Talkin' Loud Sayin' Something event at Camden's Dingwalls, which ran from the 1980s to 1991 and was influential in the UK jazz dance scene, where fast jazz and Latin records were played to an enthusiastic crowd of dancers.
