Gioachino Rossini was an Italian composer, born on February 29, 1792, in Pesaro, Italy. He gained fame for his 39 operas and also composed many songs, chamber music, piano pieces, and sacred music. Rossini set new standards for both comic and serious opera before retiring from large-scale composition in his thirties, at the height of his popularity. He passed away on November 13, 1868, in Passy, Paris, France.
